JOHNNY RICCO :
GUITARIST - WARRIOR SOUL

"THE INTERVIEW" BY : UROTSUKIDOJI

U- You just put out a re-recorded best of CD called "Classics" is that it, or can we expect a yearly injection of Warrior Soul, like back in the day?

JOHNNY- We are planning on writing a full blown new record in 2001. I have already started writing it. Basically writing riff’s and such.

U- Do you think your style will change much on the next CD? Are you guys going to jump on the "Addidas Rock" or "Stoner Rock" band wagon?

JOHNNY- We are not going to jump on the bandwagon, but we’ve all been influenced by that genre of music and you cannot help that it does inspire you in a weird way. But we can only grow.. and our style won’t change, just mature..

U- Any plans for a home video or DVD in the near future?

JOHNNY- I need to get an new bottle of Astro-Glide first and some batteries for the toys and that big sheet of plastic so I don’t mess up the floor…(haha) seriously… We caught some great stuff on the DVC. We have rehearsals.. shooting the shit... and the live London show. So we will see what happens.

U- Kory has always expressed some strong political views, does the rest of the band feel the same, or do they just go along with him?

JOHNNY- I keep my political views to myself. I write the music Kory writes the Lyrics.

U- What other known (and unknown) bands have you sang/played with?

JOHNNY- Mirage my first band when I was 11
Blake 7 was my band in Highschool
Then Warrior Soul…
Then I worked with Jay Ashton (Gene Love Jezebel ) for a bit…
I started a project Methylene Blue where I sing… it’s like NIN meets Thin Lizzy
Then there was Pure 13

U- When people ask you what type of music do you play, what do you tell them?

JOHNNY- Alternative Metal

U- After Warrior Soul went tits up in ’95 you formed a band called Pure13, as far as I know this never got to far. Are there recordings sitting on the self? What was the band like?

JOHNNY- The band was like the Furs meets bush… very cool stuff… the record should be out this year…

U- Now that Warrior Soul is back in action, will you quit your day job?

JOHNNY- I would love to… I’m a programmer and graphic designer. I do everything internet. So basically If I have a laptop and a wireless connection I can do anything from anywhere.

U- What’s your opinion of the heavy music scene in North America compared to Europe?

JOHNNY- no comment.

U- Why do you think they "got it" in England, but in the US people just didn’t seem understand Warrior Soul (well, some of us did) the first time around?

JOHNNY- We were too angry for the average person. Not many people understood what Kory was trying to get across…for some reason in England they do… Kory could answer that question for you better than I.

U- What’s the worst job you ever had to do, to support yourself while being in the band?

JOHNNY- Software tester? Not a bad job, just very tedious…. I have always had a computer background since the age of 13.

U- What’s your opinion of fans trading and selling bootleg videos of you guys live? Do you give a rats ass?

JOHNNY- I think it sucks but what can you do. Nothing…

U- If you were offered the job of playing guitar for the "NSYNC" for one million US $, but you could never play guitar (or anything else) again in any other band, would you take it?

JOHNNY- No, I would not!!!

U- If you could make a wish, and have any band on the planet disappear forever, who would it be?

JOHNNY- LENNY KRAVITZ.

U- What songs do you like playing live, which are the hardest?

JOHNNY- Losers, Cargos of doom, Downtown, Trippin on X and so on…. They aren’t really hard to play… The thing about WS guitar riffs are they are very percussive and combine lead and rhythm simultaneously, it you get what I mean.

U- Are you going to tour for this CD, if so where? (might I suggest Canada, hint, hint)

JOHNNY- We are hopefully going to tour Europe first. Then see what happens (if the money is right).

U- Dose everyone get a say in the writing?

JOHNNY- Yes.

U- Who gets the most chicks in the band?

JOHNNY- The guitar player of course.

U- What’s the most "Rock n Roll" thing you (or the band) has ever done? (like trashing hotel rooms, sex with goats, that type of thing)

JOHNNY- No Comment.

U- What are your musical influences? Those from when you started, and those that inspire you today.

JOHNNY- Steve Howe, Brian May, Al Dimeola, Eddie Van Halen Jimi Hendricks Jimmy Page and today…. Nobody…(that’s pretty sad)

U- What CDs do you play when you are on your own, and no one is around to hear? Any embarrassing secrets you want to tell?

JOHNNY- Korn, Maci Gray, David Bowie, Queen. Embarrassing secrets - not really.

U- What’s the most embarrassing thing to ever happen to you on tour?

JOHNNY- no comment.

U- What’s the proudest moment you have had as a member of this band?

JOHNNY- Opening up for Metallica in Paris on my Birthday for 20,000 people.

U- You guys have played with a lot of bands over the years (Queensryche, Danzig, Whit Zombie, Sisters Of Mercy, Public Enemy, it goes on and on) so what other bands or musicians are cool to work with, and who just pissed you off, and made you want to kick them square in the nutz?

JOHNNY- We were doing a radio station interview when we were on tour with Danzig and Kory Ripped on Glen not thinking that they were in the bus listening to the radio. Well, when we got to the venue, Glen was so fricken pissed. He said where’s the whimp ass singer of yours… I’ll dust him and the whole band!!! Kory hide in the bathroom, standing on top of a toilet seat…

U- What’s your favourite beer/drink? And give us your best "drunk rock guy" story.

JOHNNY- Summer Drink: Kettle One Gimlet which is Kettle One on the rocks with a nice tint of Roses Lime Juice.

Winter Drink: Brandy Manhattan which is Kettle One on the rocks with a nice tint of Roses Lime Juice.

best "drunk rock guy" story - Hung off a balcony of a hotel naked.

U- I'm going to name a band, you tell me your thoughts in 5 words or less:

Danzig : "too muscular".
Rage Against The Machine : FREE Mumia.
Kid Rock : NC
Backyard Babies : Total tattoos.
Space Age Playboys : music simpletons.
Limp Bis? (whatever their name is) : NSYNC of Rock.
Metallica : awesome.
Circus Of Power : cool band.
The Stooges : stinky.

U- What’s your favourite movie of all time?

JOHNNY- Exorcist.

U- As a band or musician, have you ever been pressured by a label to do something you didn’t want to do? (song choices, lyrics etc.) Did you cave in, or tell them to "cram it"?

JOHNNY- Basically we did what we wanted to do…we made the song decisions etc.

U- Every group of friends has someone who always gets picked on and teased, so who is it in Gluecifer? And what do you all do to him, or if its you, what do they do to you?

JOHNNY- We pick on Pete cuz he stinks…. He doesn’t like deodorant.

U- Pick a letter A-E to complete this sentence; We (Warrior Soul) are back together because ;
A) of Korn, ‘nuff said.
B) Kory finally got enough pussy while in the Space Age Playboys.
C) We ran out of beer money.
D) all the music on MTV just sucks beyond belief, and the world needs a f*cken’ wake up call!
E) We never broke up, it was all a media ploy.

JOHNNY- I would choose D.
